HOT WIRE Editorial Philosophy (1984–1994)

HOT WIRE specialized in woman-identified music and culture, with a focus on the performing arts, literature, and film/video. The publication was rooted in the belief that the arts hold the power to drive social change and took joy in documenting the intersection of creativity and politics or philosophy. Committed to amplifying the work of female artists and women’s groups, HOT WIRE prioritized content that reflected feminist and/or lesbian values. It aimed to both ignite and strengthen the global community of those who celebrate women’s creativity.

As the only publication devoted exclusively to the women’s music and culture industry, HOT WIRE served as both an organizing tool and an engaging read for its audience.

Each 64-page issue included a two-sided stereo recording, allowing readers to not only read about the music and poetry but also to experience it firsthand.
